Course introduction

Introduction E-learning course “The UNCCD Process”

The Capacity Building Marketplace links all existing and emerging supply and demand that relate to capacity for the meaningful implementation of the Convention, for all concerned directly or otherwise with the UNCCD process. The creation of the necessary capacity for all stakeholders is an essential element in the Marketplace realizing its objectives. The Marketplace does this in many ways, including e-learning and other courses.

This e-learning course has been developed to provide an introduction to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, its structure and institutions, and the process of its implementation. At the end of this e-learning course participants should have a general understanding of the core issues of the Convention, how it operates and what the processes are for its effective implementation.

Course objectives

• Provide an introduction to the history of the United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification
• Outline the structure and the main institutions of the Convention their functions and their roles
• Give an introduction to the secretariat of the Convention and its functions
• And provide information on the main processes within the Convention and their role for the efficacious implementation of the same.

This course is divided into five sections:

  1. History of the UNCCD
  2. Structure and institutions of the UNCCD, their functions and roles
  3. The secretariat and the Global Mechanism
  4. The UNCCD Process
  5. Course paper

This course is free of charge. Upon successful completion, you will be rewarded a “Certificate”.

If you score 90% or higher you will receive a “Certificate of Excellence”.

 

Section 1: History of the UNCCD

This section concerns:

  • A brief history of the UNCCD
  • How and why it became part of the international political agenda
  • The steps required to form a working convention of the United Nations System
  • The development of the UNCCD as a convention, as well as its objectives and strategies

After the completion of this module, the participant should have a good understanding of how the UNCCD was established and developed over time to reach its effective implementation, as well as an understanding of the 10-year Strategy (The Strategy).

Section 2: Structure and bodies of the UNCCD

This section is about the different institutions and bodies of the Convention.

It explores:

  • The specific tasks pursued by the Convention’s bodies and institutions
  • Why such a subdivision is necessary to make the Convention work

Section 3: The secretariat and the Global Mechanism

In this section participants will be introduced to the secretariat and the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD.

Questions that will be answered include:

  • What is the Global Mechanism?
  • When and how was the secretariat of the Convention established?
  • What are the main functions of the secretariat of the UNCCD?
  • How does the organizational structure of the secretariat look like?
  • All this and other questions will be address during this section.

By the end of this section, participants should have a good understanding of what the UNCCD secretariat and Global Mechanism are and their role in the effective implementation of the Convention.

Section 4: The UNCCD Process

Participants will learn about the main processes of the UNCCD’s implementation.

The section includes:

  • The UNCCD decision making process
  • The National Action Programme (NAP) alignment process
  • The reporting process and UNCCD beyond 2015.

The expected learning outcomes of this section are a clear understanding of the major processes within the UNCCD and their role in the effective implementation of the Convention.

Course paper

After completing all the sections of the course, and successfully submitting all the quizzes, to finalise your participation please submit a short course paper on one out of the following three topics.

1. The role of the Secretariat in the UNCCD process

2. The main functions of the COP and its subsidiary bodies

3. The basic history and the evolution of the UNCCD​
