The Photo Competition of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Capacity Building Marketplace (CBM) is meant for people to show the world their photos regarding the combat against desertification, land degradation and drought. This competition aims to promote their creativity and to give them the opportunity to share ideas and experiences in this field.

The title of the competition is:

“Have you been affected by land degradation? Show us how!”


Using only your mobile phone, send us a picture that shows an example of how you have been directly affected by land degradation.

Participation in the photo competition is FREE!

Participants should register through this form. Registration means agreement to the following Rules:



To be able to participate, all the participants need to be at least 18 years old on the date of the submission deadline. Participants must provide proof of their age if and when requested by the Capacity Building Marketplace team so to do.

Participants are limited to one submission per person and the same photo cannot be submitted more than once.

This competition is NOT open for participation by professional photographers.

Current and former staff, consultants and interns of the UNCCD cannot participate in the competition.



The photos and registration forms have to be sent between May 1st and June 22nd 2018. The deadline is June 22nd 2018 at 00:00 Bonn time (GMT +2). No registration form or photo will be accepted after this date.

With the main objective of raising public awareness on land degradation, drought and desertification, this photo competition aims to sensitize people on actions to combat desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD), and to encourage participants to showcase the impact environmental issues has on their lives.

The following are some of the topics the photo could depict:

  • Agriculture Development;
  • Awareness raising;
  • Biodiversity;
  • Desertification;
  • Drought;
  • Food Security;
  • Land degradation;
  • Landscape restoration;
  • Poverty reduction/Development;
  • Soil Science;
  • Sustainable forests;
  • Sustainable Land Management;
  • Water management;
  • Training and education to deal with Desertification, Land degradation, Drought.

Competition submissions must not include any endorsements of products or services, or any obscene, violent, racist, religious intolerance or defamatory content. Incomplete entries or entries that do not comply with the formal specifications will be automatically disqualified.

Submissions may also not be accepted into the contest if the image in the entry features an identifiable individual who has not given their consent to appear or if the image features advertising or trademarks which would otherwise require the UNCCD to obtain permission to use.



Submissions must contain one photograph and accompanying text.

Photo: In JPEG-format, PNG-format, TIFF-format or BMP-format and minimum resolution of 1024x1024 pixels.

Text: Short title and a text of maximum 2000 characters or 250 words in English, French, Russian or Spanish.

Photos can be taken in color, black and white and the using of filters is not forbidden.

All entries must be original works produced by the participant which have not been published anywhere.

The participants grant the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), its partners and other UN agencies as well as other persons or entities authorized by the UNCCD, a free of charge, non-exclusive, irrevocable, transferable, perpetual, worldwide license to use the copyright, related rights or any other intellectual property rights that have arisen by law or will arise by law from the prepared and submitted photos. The UNCCD is entitled to publish the photos, but has no obligation to do so.


How to Register

Participation in the photo competition is FREE!

Step 1: Participants will need to register using this form, on which they should fill in their personal details, and indicate the required information regarding their photo.

Step 2:The photo has to be uploaded on our Dropbox file request. The participants do not need to have an account to send their photo. The name of the participant and the name of the file of the photo have to be the same as on the registration form (otherwise we will not be able to know whose submission it is once received).

Warning! In order for your submission to be taken into consideration, it is mandatory to register first through the mentioned form and after to upload your photo on our Dropbox.

The UNCCD accepts no responsibility for technical or other disturbances that may impede the submission of your photo. By submitting your photo, you accept these Entry Rules and Conditions. The UNCCD expressly reserves the right to exclude photos if participants breach these Rules and Conditions or in case of a corresponding cause or suspicion. The rules may be amended at any time by the UNCCD with notice being provided of the same.


Voting Process

There will be 20 short-listed photos from which 3 winners will be selected by the public at large. The winning photos will be chosen through a vote that will take place between the 28th of June and the 15th of July 2018, from the short-list of 20 photos pre-chosen by the Capacity Building Marketplace.

Each voter has the possibility to choose their 5 favorites from the 20 short-listed photos. The public at large will be encouraged to vote their favorites according to the originality of the photo and the innovation and the possible impact of the projects and ideas presented in the photo. The first 3 photos that get the highest number of points will be declared the winners.



All the short-listed persons will be given certificates accordingly. For the 3 winners the prizes will be as it follows:

  • First place will be given 150 EUR;
  • Second place will be given 100 EUR;
  • Third place will be given 75 EUR.

Additionally the makers of the 10 best photos will get an awesome UNCCD package including CBM brochures and other promotional materials, a CBM t-shirt, a CBM bag plus an USB flash-drive containing all the UNCCD publications.

The first 10 short-listed people will be featured in cover stories on the Marketplace front page and receive a certificate of participation.

The prizes are as stated and are non‐transferable. If due to circumstances beyond the UNCCD’s control, the UNCCD is unable to provide a stated prize, the UNCCD reserves the right to award a substitute prize of equal value.

The winners will be notified by email within 7 (seven) working days of the winner being selected.

The UNCCD will actively endeavor to contact the winner with arrangements for the prizes for a period of 1 (one) month following the announcement of the competition winners. In the event that the UNCCD is unable to contact the winner in this notification period, the UNCCD reserves the right to reallocate the cash prize.

A list of winning entries will be available on the UNCCD CBM website for a period of at least 3 (three) months from the closing date of entry to the competition. Entrants shall note that by submitting an entry, they are deemed to have agreed that if picked as a winner their name may be disclosed to any third party, by the UNCCD, when providing a list of the names of the entrants where requested.

The UNCCD’s decision is final. No discussions will be entered into as regards this decision.
