The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a worldwide network of over 1500 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in more than 130 countries, working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels.

CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional and national climate issues. CAN has regional and national network hubs that coordinate these efforts around the world.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

A more specific TOR for this position will be discussed with the selected candidate, key areas of work will be at the core of the work:

  • Provide advice and support to the Secretariat and the CAN network (nodes and members) on its work related to Loss & Damage, Adaptation and building climate resilience and the implementation of our network strategy
  • Support the Impacts Campaign Task Team and Secretariat in deepening the design and implementation of the World we Want campaign in its second phase  
  • Support efforts to build deeper collaboration between nodes and members in the network and with our external partners working in the climate impacts space 
  • Facilitate opportunities for funding work on climate impacts 
  • Advice the Executive Director and secretariat on opportunities for new strategic partnerships
  • Participate in relevant for a in the network and outside to further the implementation of the network’s work on Climate Impacts
  • Provide advice and guidance on the overarching strategic and political issues related to work on climate impacts and its intersectionality with other issues, such as social justice, human rights, rights of nature, just recovery and climate ambition.
  • Provide guidance and support to the Secretariat and Nodes on the implementation of grassroots strategies and collaboration as part of our building power strategy
  • Support CAN communicators on the messaging on climate impacts and finance, including loss & damage and adaptation that helps connect people and policy 
  • Participation in key conferences on issues related to climate impacts and other relevant issues 
  • Help increase the visibility of the network’s work on climate impacts 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants should have a high level of understanding of both the policy context and political dynamic related to the issues of climate impacts, loss & damage and adaptation. They should have existing and long-term relationships with key stakeholders in this sector and command a high-level of respect with key players. A long history in the global south and a deep understanding of the dynamics and priorities of key sectors in these countries will be required. 

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • A strong understanding of the work, policies and mission of CAN and a commitment to the global objective to not exceed the 1.5°C global warming objective in line with equity and science 
  • A record of at least 10 years of working in the field of climate impacts 
  • Experience in working with CAN members and nodes and other stakeholders 
  • A clear political understanding of the role of civil society and governments in addressing the issue of climate impacts in the next years 
  • Ability to work in an inclusive and collective manner 
  • Experience in facilitating, leading and guiding CSO and other stakeholders on the issues related to climate impacts and the intersectionality with other issues.
