SDG15.3.1 capacity development
A total of 316 participants from 140 country Parties to the Convention were trained in March-May 2018 during five regional training workshops implemented by the UNCCD secretariat, the Global Mechanism and UN Environment, and funded by the Global Environment Facility. Participants were trained, among others, on the use of data, tools and methods to calculate SDG Indicator 15.3.1, with hand-on exercises by Conservation International on the use of Trends.Earth. Through the hands-on exercises, participants familiarized themselves with the available data, with approaches to adapt them to their specific country situations, and with ways of how to seamlessly integrate national and default data.
A series of online tutorials were also made available by the UNCCD secretariat to enhance national capacity to use Earth observation data to estimate SDG Indicator 15.3.1’s three sub-indicators.
Furthermore, Conservation international has developed step-by-step guides and video tutorials on the use of Trends.Earth.
Further opportunities for face-to-face and online training, are expected to become available in 2021, in preparation for the next UNCCD national reporting and review process. The Group on Earth Observation Land Degradation Neutrality (GEO-LDN) Initiative also has a working group which aims at developing an innovative capacity building mechanism addressing the needs of various stakeholders at regional, national and individual levels.
