A research roadmap for sustainable land management
The EU-funded project INSPIRATION (Integrated Spatial PlannIng, land use and soil management Research AcTION) aims to develop a European research roadmap on sustainable land management practices. INSPIRATION is a coordination and support action funded by the European Commission in order to develop a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for Europe on soil, land use and land management.
The agenda would help focus Europe's research, supporting policymaking on environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically affordable soil and land use management. The ways in which communities use and manage land impacts the environment, its ability to sustain biodiversity and provide for society’s needs. These needs include food, drinking water, energy, and building materials.
Today, there is growing recognition that land management needs to focus on the sustainable use of land and its resources. How to do so requires research-based evidence to ensure that policymakers, businesses and communities understand the possible impact of the options open to them, and in particular their consequences for society, the economy and the environment.
INSPIRATION is investigating current developments and uncertainties surrounding likely future trends in land management practices across Europe. The project plans to identify and prioritise gaps in knowledge, technology, and policies relating to land-use.
Based on the research, the project plans to propose a coordinated European research strategy to address the gaps. INSPIRATION will also identify relevant existing and new funding, as well as delivery models, for implementing this strategic research agenda.
By the end of the project in February 2018, the project plans to have brought together European public and private research funders willing to collaboratively invest in delivering this research agenda at the local, regional, national and transnational levels.
