Vulnerability (Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment)
Like the baboon, or that woman who made flour so long ago, we depend ultimately on Nature. We can dream that we are managing our world and its ecosystems, but in reality it is Nature that manages us. That day she rescued us from a primitive technology gone wrong but not because she cared.
Will any fortuitous wind blow to save us from our modern lack of control – our pollution, habitat destruction, depleted ozone layer, radioactive waste, crashing biodiversity? If we continue to act like we can pat out those flames with a couple of fire-beaters, there may be no drive home when they have finished scorching the land. We are so very, very vulnerable.
