National Coordinator of Internationally funded projects e.g. Desert Margins Program (DMP) funded by GEF
(Global Environment Facility); Kalahari Namib Project (KNP); PRACTICE (Prevention and Restoration
Actions to Combat Desertification. An Integrated Assessment); Principle Investigators (PI) in the IDESSA
project: “An Integrative Decision Support System for Sustainable Rangeland Management in southern
African Savannas”; Lead authors (LA’s) in Chapters for three IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform on
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) deliverables, i.e. 3c, 3bi and 2b; Project leader of the DEA funded
project regarding “Bush Expert” in the NRM programme. I was the Chairperson of the CST Bureau
(Committee on Science and Technology) for the UNCCD, also representing the African continent in the
CST Bureau. I served as Co-chair on the Advisory Group for the Provision of Scientific Advice (AGSA) on
DLDD (Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought) matters for the UNCCD and was part of the
UNCCD-SPI (Science- Policy Interface) committee (2014-2017). I serve on the evaluation panels for the
NRF (National Research Foundation) in South Africa. I have done many consultancies regarding advice
about SLM and restoration, e.g. the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), UNDP
(United Nations Development Program), UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program, e.g. LADA – Land
Degradation Assessment in Dry Lands), DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, e.g.
Landcare, Fixmove – Fixed Point Monitoring of Vegetation, developed the LLM – Local Level Monitoring
manual), DEA (Department of Environmental Affairs, e.g. National Action Program (NAP) for the UNCCD in
South Africa), South African National Parks (SANParks), the African Union-Semi-Arid Food Grain Research
and Development (AU-SAFGRAD), for the company “Integrated Sustainability Services (ISS)” regarding “A
total economic valuation of village rangelands and market and value chain analysis of livestock products
and services” in the arid Savannas of southern Africa”. I am an), was the president and chairperson of the
Trust and now only a member of the GSSA (Grassland Society of South Africa). I was the president of the
Arid Zone Ecology Forum (AZEF) and am a member of the Society of Ecological Restoration (SER).

In 2010 and 2015, I received the award as the “International Researcher of the year” from the North-West
University for contributions in policy and advisory bodies, related societies and managerial level,
international panels, subject related journals, conferences and organisations at national and global level. In
2007, I was selected as one of the top 10% and in 2009 and 2010 as one of the top 20% researchers at the
North-West University in South Africa. I have been external examiner for many Universities in South Africa
and over the world.
