UNCCD Scientific Conferences

In order to strengthen the scientific basis of the Convention, the Conference of the Parties (COP) at its eighth session in 2007 decided that future sessions of the CST shall be organized in a predominantly scientific and technical conference-style format and focus on a specific thematic topic relevant to the implementation of The Strategy, to be determined in advance by the COP (decision 13/COP.8).

Since then, three scientific conferences have been organized:

The UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference was held in 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and addressed the theme “Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management”.

The UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference was held in April 2013 in Bonn, Germany under the thematic topic of “Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas”.

The UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference on “Combating DLDD for poverty reduction and sustainable development: the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices” was held in March 2015 in Cancun, Mexico.
